I’ve seen mail clubs priced at 7 dollars that include MULTIPLE prints, stickers, sticker sheets like 😭 how is it a sustainable business practice

I haven’t seen anyone else talk about this yet but you’re absolutely right!! I’ve started to feel a lil self conscious about my own mail club because I feel like I need to add more stuff to it or make it cheaper to compete with some of these newer mail clubs 😵‍💫

See I charge £7.50 for an A6 postcard, 2 stickers and a cute surprise extra (including postage) and I’ve had a few people let me know that for that price, they would expect to be recieving more than that… with fees and materials, I make a small profit! My snail mail club is pretty small at the moment and I’m really enjoying the time it takes to make something special for someone but man it’s a minefield to try and prove the value of what I provide to customers 🫠

Yesss this!!! So many folks left my mail club last month just because I included one less item but the quality was higher than before 😅 folks who haven’t done it themselves or dont understand how manufacturing or making something works won’t ever understand the expenses and value behind it. There’s the people out there who appreciate it and those are the folks who stick around in the club long term and I’m grateful for! 😇💕

This is such a good point. I started out doing print and sticker club and moved onto pins. But closing everything up in April. Costs are too high to make stuff and profit. Plus it’s not worth the issue of sending to USA or EU any more :(

i totally feel this!! people have asked me to start one but i don’t know if it feels right for me at the moment. i never want people to feel like they HAVE to spend money on something and commit - sometimes i think id rather people pay the money they have to buy things they want rather than a surprise! i think hustle culture defo plays into it, i ran by business alongside my full time job for so long and it meant i was less concerned about making money because it wasn’t my sole income and i see that happening with newer businesses. ofc anyone can price things how they want but it won’t be sustainable long term and like you said it devalues the work of everyone else. now i need to price things properly to pay my bills it’s hard to compete! a very interesting conversation

FACTS!!!!!! I miss when mail clubs were just artists trying to make a lil consistent income on the side. Back when I first started my business I told myself I would start a patreon at 10k followers, finally hit that and now the market is soooo saturated I don’t even know if it’s worth it anymore 😭

i think people need to realize that normal art prints are like $20+ for the print alone. and print clubs are the print, a letter, packaging, and more! even if it’s is $20 for the club, that’s still a great price point! print clubs have a lot of time and care put towards them, so support artists and value their time!

thank you for talking about this! i’ve had my patreon since 2021 and it’s been so interesting seeing this new growth and now feel like i have to compete with everyone. I’ve not increased my tiers at all in this time and intl postage when i started was £1.80 and now it’s £3.40 and that’s eats such a chunk of my monthly income but i feel i can’t increase my tiers in fear people will think it’s too expensive compared to everyone else now 😅

Yep, started one literally this month even though I don't have a huge following because I'm trying to have more audacity, and so far I have one subscriber! It's at basically the same price it would cost to buy the stuff from me normally, just with the promise of exclusivity, but I see so many mail clubs that I look at that just. Cannot be profitable

Completely agree! The first mail clubs I saw were £7 for a print and a letter and that was (and still should be) a great deal. Now they’ve blown up it definitely feels like the reason people are subscribing has changed: many (not all) seem to be valuing the quantity of stuff over the fact they’re supporting an artist they like - which is making people undersell themselves, devaluing everyone’s art🤷‍♀️

no this is so real!! i even considered closing mine for good because i can not keep doing the $7 a month and even be able to make anything from it! i’ve just been spending money without seeing anything from it!! esp because people are making theirs more stuff for the same price so it’s like, oh!

10000%!! I think my mail club is on the more expensive end compared to other mail clubs, but I try to add more in exchange for that. To me, it’s better to price higher and add more than try to make it cheaper and add less. Obviously, I wanted to add more to the mail or lower my pricing, but when I pulled out the spreadsheet in the beginning, I could not price it lower and pay myself for my time 😳 but I figured that those who see the value will sign up, and those that don’t, won’t!! Hard agree and I have one 😅 well it’s kinda different but same concept and mine only works because it has a digital tier where you can download it and print yourself. But people are really expecting the most insane quality for no money. I definitely do not have money behind it so I’m using card stock from the range and hoping for the best.

I’ll start a sticker club this january and honestly pricing is the thing that worries me the most. I can’t offer low prices as I live in Turkiye and shipping is so expensive here, and I genuinely cannot comprehend how people can offer $6 clubs. I don’t want to devalue my or other artists works too so I’ll just hope for the best i guess 🫠

I recently raised my price because although I wasn't making a loss, I realized the amount of work that actually went into making everything. I print all of the tutorials/stickers myself and enjoy doing it, but it's nice to not be essentially breaking even.

I’d rather artists put their actual price or put a little less in, so I know I am actually helping them, they put so much work into them they need to sell them at a price that represents that, otherwise I feel bad that I’m not actually helping them 😊 as an artist myself who doesn’t sell my art, I respect how much work goes into these art works, so I think they should get what they deserve for the quality and quantity that they are putting out, but that’s just me 🤷🏽‍♀️😊✨✨✨💋

This is such a good point. I have one and it’s literally a letter and a cardstock poem, and that’s it and that’s honestly enough labor!! And like you said I was an artist/writer before and this is a way to support my practice, I didn’t set out to be a mail club business owner lol. Anyways I appreciate this rant deeply. also a lot of us artists dont seem to realise theyre fucking ALL of us over by undercharging. theyre normalising charging waaaayy too little for art, making customers/consumers believe art is worth so very little. also causing the rest of us to have no work/sales when we DO actually charge to our value

I love this conversation. It is really interesting. I only just started learning about mail clubs, but starting one myself is a much harder startup than I assumed. Especially at the beginning when you’re over buying supplies to fulfill a small amount of subscribers. I do gallery work and I have extra money to spend on starting. I do think I will raise my prices because of the extra work going into it.

this is a really good point, I am a pet portrait artist that is looking for a change and a chance to expand my skills drawing other animals in other mediums, I also have a background in science and would love to contribute to charity efforts, so I believed that the best way to achieve this combination was to start a mail club, it's been months of planning and it launches very soon!! I have priced things in 3 tiers, so the more inclusions = the higher price tier and I made sure my profit margins are comfortable enough to actually make it work, fingers crossed it will 🤞 i am trying to avoid falling into the trap of setting prices too low and it not becoming sustainable
