Yes, we not getting a harem, power fantasy of a bland dude. Female mcs actually bring a story. It can be survival, doing the stuff they couldn't do on earth like own a business, or use their skills from their past life to help people in their current world.

plus a lot of early isekai was female lead. Inyuyasha, Escaflowne, Fushigi yugi, being the biggest titles i know. I even remembered reading a manwha about 2 girls who were put back in ancient Korea.

I think it’s just that way cause the female characters act like they have other priorities because the environment is unsafe and are trying to adapt and overcome.

I pretty much agree that female mc is the way to go. I was pleasantly surprised by Water Magician for being a relatively likable male mc in an isekai. He’s not perfect nor a creep, and it’s a nice easy watch for the most part.

90s isekai mostly a genre filled with women main characters shoujo isekai were amazing like Escaflowne (anime), Magic Knight Rayearth,Fushigi Yûgi, From Far Away where the main character had to learn the language of the land she landed in etc... Then there is the villainess types which can be hit or miss even the seinen ones like you mentioned Ascendance of a bookworm. of course there is Chihiro from Spirited Away. I think the difference is that modern male centered isekai post Sword Art Online is about power fantasy and wish fulfilment. Where as the women led ones are a power fantasy to a certain extent but they are more about self discovery than wish fulfilment
