@problematic_leo73: babying your automatic Ford Focus will tear your transmission up. the latest generation of Ford Focus (and Fiesta) use a dual clutch automatic transmission. this is essentially a 6 speed manual controlled by a computer chip to do the shifting for you. because of this, you will need to apply specific driving habits to prevent catastrophic damage. these are some key points: 1. They don't like sloppy gas input at very low speeds. You HAVE to be consistent with the gas or the TC (computer) won't know what you are trying to do and will start hunting for gears. 2. They are tuned for economy, which means that even if the car can tell that you are on a hill, it'll stay on the tallest gear that it can. If you are going to be hitting them hills, switch to S/L mode. 3. It should NEVER hesitate on a "simple" shift. If you floor the sonofabitch, it won't hesitate that it needs an upshift, if you slam the brakes, it won't hesitate that what needs to happen is a downshift. If it doesn't follow those rules, you may need to look at the TCM. 4. That transmission really doesn't like crawling. If you are in stop and go traffic, it's better to just do that: stop and go whenever you have almost one car length open ahead, don't crawl at 3 MPH 3-4 feet from the next bumper. any I own two Focus titaniums with that DCT. Here's what we have learned so far: 1. They don't like sloppy gas input at very low speeds. You HAVE to be consistent with the gas or the TC won't know what you are trying to do and will start hunting for gears. 2. They are tuned for economy, which means that even if the car can tell that you are on a hill, it'll stay on the tallest gear that it can. If you are going to be hitting them hills, switch to S/L mode. 3. It should NEVER hesitate on a "simple" shift. I agree with everything you said, I’ve changed roughly 100 clutches in those within 2-3 years and the main culprit is the build up of clutch dust gumming up the a and b clutch fork rollers and the throw out bearings. From what I’ve seen is that city driven cars tend to wear out the throw out bearing and significantly more clutch dust. The way the throw out bearing work on these cars is opposite of a traditional manual, instead of using the bearing to release the clutch these dct trannys use the bearing to engage the clutch. Usually the clutches last 70-130k mi for city driven cars and 100-180k for highway cars. There is also the occasional clutch fork actuator that goes bad on them and the tcm as well. Overall they aren’t inherently bad transmissions but their issues are driver and some design flaws.

I drive a ‘15 focus se. Tranny ain’t horrible but when I go like 7 mph at a consistent rate, it feels like the tranny slips. So when going from completely stopped to start driving, should I give it a little more gas? I hope this makes sense

How did your guises Ford focus’s last I had a 2015 I bought it at 79,000 miles and it literally lasted me until 91,000 miles it didn’t even make it 100,000 miles and all four pistons were misfiring. The transmission had completely gone like it wouldn’t even go into gear but I can admit Ford does make a strong engine and it’s still turned on. lol

Yeah. I just drove it hard. It never slipped after I got the updated tcm installed and a new set of clutches.

I had a 2013 Focus SE. I replaced the transmission with a NEW one and it gave me problems within a month. It was jerky on shifting from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4. The problem would go away when I would floor it 🤣 so glad I got rid of it 4 years later after I paid it off.

I used to unplug the battery on mine overnight every 5k miles or so to reset the horrible “learning” transmission logic. Ended up dumping that car 4.5 years later for a Subaru Outback and never looked back

I’m at 114k on my wife’s and this explains a lot !! I noticed some issues and lately after consistently giving it more gas and slightly tougher acceleration MPGs have obv decreased but the transmission does seem to be shifting way way cleaner

Thanks so much for this video, I just did a $2k steering rack repair at like 100k mileage and I’ve been dreading the transmission randomly failing next but this vid helps.

The problem is when people let it slip. You need firm brake pressure at a stop. And immediately start moving when you let off. Best DCTs are eDCTs. Electric motor does the initial movement from a stop so the clutch doesn’t have to slip. It can also perfectly match the speed of engine and transmission shafts so there is no abrupt jerkiness when shifting.

okay, I have a 2015 Focus Titanium. I feel I understand what you are saying but I want to make sure. A rotator when out in mine and the mechanic at the dealership told me to not go heave on the pedal.
ny car startles a lot when changing 1st gear to second.

I replaced my transmission at 40.000 miles. Thankfully mine was covered but Ford knows its an issue. They wont deal with it.

Remind me of how I have learned to drive a VWDCT smoothly, like you have to be deliberate with your throttle input otherwise it can get jerky. But once you learn it, it can be very smooth and lovely.
