The Library of Alexandria burning indeed tragic, but the vast majority of the works it held were not the only copies. So few individual works of what burned were truly lost, as most important pieces had long been duplicated and spread elsewhere. Factor in the fact that the library had also been in decline due to various factors for centuries prior, and the impact of it ceasing to exist has been almost certainly overblown in modern times. That said, there are most likely items not duplicated that we lost forever, but, again, most important texts has been copied and kept elsewhere by then.
