She says 'pay your employees better', but for restaurants to do that, they would have to charge more for the food&drinks because the cost of the wages would be included in the price.. So if they would do what she's suggesting, she would end up paying more..

I hated automatic gratuity because of the place I used to work at. My coworkers became so lax and lazy because they were gonna get tipped regardless. But management stepped up and fixed it real quick due to complaints

There is a terrible restaurant chain that charges 20% service fee upfront, but when I asked the server how it worked because I wanted to make sure she got the tip. It turns out they’re trying to bypass laws. They don’t pay any minimum wage and instead treat all of their staff as commission sales people. The 20% fee is then splitamong everyone including back of house. So you have to actually tip on top of the 20% if you want the server to actually get money. It should be highly illegal, but so far it isn’t.

I honestly think that this should be the new standard... been saying it for years. Servers deserve to be paid for their work unless something egregious happens.

1, If the restaurants paid their servers more, the food prices would rise exponentially. 2, In San Francisco, we tried paying the servers more and stopped tipping. The servers quit as they made more off of tips.

Restaurants have to raise prices in order to pay a “livable wage”. You can pay it in a tip, service fee, or much higher priced items. Independent restaurant owners are far from millionaires.

My restaurant pays us $16 an hour and there’s a 20% service charge on every bill to pay for that and then whatever is tipped on top gets split between all of our FOH staff and i love it my income is not determined on whether or not someone tips

There are several restaurants that have done this in my area and I am 100% for it. Pay 20% tip, or just charge the food 20% more. Either way it’s the same wnd then servrs dont have to tip out or worry about getting paid properly. Win win

in argentina its called "cubierto" is a smal fee (not 20%) and its listed on the door and menu so you decide if tou wanna eat there or not
