@ashleyjshields: If your throat mucous keeps coming back — and allergy meds don’t help it might be reflux… but not the kind you think. There’s a type of reflux called silent reflux or LPR. It doesn’t burn your chest — it irritates your throat, voice box, and airway instead. Most of the time you don’t feel acid. You feel the after-effects: throat mucus, constant clearing, post-nasal drip, cough, or that tight lump-in-the-throat feeling. Here’s what’s actually happening: Tiny amounts of acid or pepsin rise up from the stomach. Not enough to burn… but enough to inflame the tissues up here. And your body responds by making mucus to protect you. But there’s another layer nobody talks about: histamines. When your gut is irritated or inflamed, histamine levels can go up — and histamines trigger: • excess mucous • swelling • throat irritation • that ‘allergy-like’ feeling even when it’s NOT allergies. So now you have two things happening: irritation from LPR + histamine-driven mucous. That’s why nose sprays or allergy meds barely touch it. To calm this down, you want to address BOTH: ✔️ Reduce reflux irritation • support motility • strengthen gut lining • avoid big or late meals • activate your vagus nerve before eating ✔️ Lower histamine load • avoid high-histamine foods temporarily • add vitamin C, quercetin, or DAO support • support gut bacteria balance • reduce stress, because stress increases histamine release When the inflammation AND histamines calm down, the mucus finally goes with it.
