@melissadivaristhompson: Navigating in-laws isn’t about choosing sides — it’s about choosing each other. 💛 Most couples aren’t struggling because of the in-laws… they’re struggling because they don’t have a plan. When you and your partner act like a united front, everything shifts. Boundaries feel easier. Tension drops. Connection grows. Save this for the holidays — your future self will thank you. And if you want tools to stay connected even when things feel hard, my mini-course From Tension to Tenderness will change how you communicate forever. 🤍✨ #c#couplestherapyr#relationshiptipsi#inlawsb#boundariesm#marriagetips

At what point do we get to ask why we keep going places that make us feel like we need a game plan to have a successful time before we enter that space ?

The problem is when the hubby doesn’t defend you. So it’s BOTH a MIL & husband problem.

Honestly it’s the feeling that my partner is so scared to set boundaries with his family that I am left feeling sad, frustrated, and in constant protective mode.

My MIL was definitely the problem but it was also exactly what u r saying. My husband was never on my side, he defended everything she did, he hated boundaries and thought his mother shouldn’t have boundaries because he’s her son and the moment I said anything he just snapped and couldn’t communicate because he didn’t want to hear my feelings.

We held a boundary and we fell out with entire family. It was my fault of course because my partner never usually holds a boundary :)

I do not agree, even with teamwork it does not change their behavior. That’s on them.

Okay - I’ve experienced talking about instances prior to them happening with my spouse, then we get in the moment (with in-laws, etc) and he “forgets” and then it causes arguments after

Couples shouldnt have to start out life battling a crazy parent with and/or control issues. Its uncomfortable and very stressful. Not to mention a mindfck for the person who's parent is acting a fool. They have to accept it and then realize how its affected their whole life and structured the person they are, make a conscious effort to stand up against it and then stand firm when the flying monkeys come. Some get it quick. It took my husband 20 years, my sanity and me absolutely refusing to be the bigger person anymore or physically be around someone who resents me .

Nah it was my MIL when she yelled at me demanding that I hand my newborn over for her to take him for the weekend and my step FIL threatened to take their grandbaby without my permission and they called me selfish.

You are exactly right. And if one spouse isn’t willing to partner in this, THAT is a problem!
