I have done this to my children, if I get Alzheimer’s or anything debilitating I told them their only job is to put me in a home and walk away because I won’t even know who they are also they have 1 life and they need to live it

I am an only child. Mother lived until 98 and was independent until 96. I provided her with 24/7 care so she could stay at home for her last 2 years. Cost me $200,000 out of pocket, out of my nest egg. I had to continue to work until I reached 72 and that stopped when no one wanted to hire a senior. Nobody really cared as to my sacrifice so why even bother to share my story.

I took in my mother to live with me for her last 4 years. She made it to 100. She passed away September 8. She refused to take a bath . It was such a difficult time for both of us. You also lose your freedom. Can’t go anywhere since they can barely walk.. my mom talked nonstop. She did not have peace of mind. I prayed everyday and cried a lot seeing her suffering. It traumatised me for sure. Now she’s gone and I don’t know what to do without her.

I’ll go into a nursing home before I’ll burden my kids with having to take care of me. I would NEVER want them to put their own lives on hold. I chose to have them so it was my job and my responsibility to care for them when they were growing up, they don’t owe me anything. I think elderly people who insist on staying at home even though they can’t take care of themselves are selfish.

I wasted 15 years caring for incontinent mum with dementia and then dad with terminal cancer. It damaged my relationship with my daughter, cost me my career, my savings , my health and sanity. Dont do it.

What is the point of staying alive when you’re in that condition? I’m sure the elderly don’t want to do that to their relatives, I’m sure if they have the option to take control of their own demise, they would go willingly and happily. They should have that choice.

People live so much longer today. Nothing prepares you for an aging parent!

The hardest part about it is nearly everyone has to work now to pay the bills - men, women, everyone. And well into their 60s or 70s. Few people can just stay home and be a full-time caregiver to an aging parent. Doing this in addition to being fully employed is near impossible.

There should be compensation for care givers. Government offers nothing.

My mom is on hospice but I only get an aide 1 hour 3 times a week. I am beyond exhausted. Sending hugs to my fellow caregivers. ❤️

Parents need to put their assets in an irrevocable trust at least 5 years before going into a nursing home. Otherwise their assets will be taken to pay for the nursing home.

I’m 54. I care for my adult autistic daughter, my elderly dad, AND my bestie who is on hospice and she’s DYING and I because the caregiver because she has no parents, no spouse and no kids. Her heart and kidneys are failing and she has about 30 days left MAYBE. We been friends for 40 years so I think it’s the best I can do for her🥺

there is no shame in letting them live in assisted living. they can be social and have nurses.

My dad is 82 and has dementia. Every time mom and I bring up the topic of his finances or the future he gets angry or he says he's not thinking about that yet or he just refuses to talk about any of it, but he can no longer make decisions, he has no idea what's in his bank accounts or what he has that could cover a care facility for example, he never made these arrangements earlier in his life and now we are stuck dealing with all the problems that brings.

Providing care for a parent who did not provide the same care for u as a child. It will come up as a caregiver

Many elderly live too long and oftentimes quality of life is extremely poor. IMO those who are benefiting are pharmaceutical companies and the medical profession. Everyone dies, and so many want to prolong life for as long as possible, even at the expense of others. Often it’s adult children in their 70s taking care of their parents in their 90s. Absurd.

The worst thing about caring for my father was the constant abuse by friends and society. You become a scapegoat and they see you as weak. It was hell.

They raised you and did all the same things...I went through my inlaws and my parents...its rough its hard but its a short time and they are gone forever. You lock in and push through and find groups for support and help. We owe them that they gave us life.

I have read the comments and at least I know I am not alone. Comedian Louis CK has a great bit in his routine of having ultra old parents. The one that dies first is usually your favorite, and the other one never dies. Yup, living that nightmare.

I cared for my mom, without ANY help from siblings, for the last 17 years of her life while working a full-time job. Diapers, bathing, feeding, everything. It was HARD, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. She passed away in July, and I miss her terribly.

I’m an only child, single, and cared for my disabled elderly mother on my own without any help. I was her caregiver until she died, almost five years. It was challenging but I’d do it again.

I can say that this is the most difficult task of my life so far. I am fortunate to have paid help at home for my mother and aunt, but the stress is so intense that I think I will die before them. I am simply becoming ill from having so many responsibilities with work, children, husband, and caring for elderly relatives, and what hurts the most is seeing my brother and sister absent, not helping at all, as if only their lives and their families mattered.
