Many people assume the Dakshin Kali of Pharping, Kathmandu is the same as the gentle Dakshina Kali of Bengal, the calm and nurturing mother. But the truth is different. The confusion lies in the word itself. Dakshina means "right side," while Dakshin means "south." The Kali of Pharping is not the benign right-handed form. She is Dakshin Kali, the power of Shiva’s southern face, a form deeply rooted in Tantra. In the 17th century, during the reign of Pratap Malla, the Goddess appeared in the king’s dream and revealed that her Swayambhu Sheela lay hidden in the forests of Pharping. When the king ignored the dream, she possessed one of the palace Panchakanyas and commanded him to find her. With the guidance of the royal Tantric priest Lambakarna Bhatta, the sacred stone was unearthed and a temple was established. But the Goddess who manifested was not the gentle mother they expected. She revealed herself as Kanakeshwari, mistress of Shiva’s southern face and queen of Nisachar beings; bhoota, preta, rakshasa and yogini. Her fierce presence brought untimely deaths and misfortunes across the village of Pharping. Afterall she was Samshanavasi, one who loves being in cremation ground. To calm her power, the king and the Raj Tantrik established her at the gorge between Purnavati Ganga and Udharvati Ganga, where her gaze would not fall directly upon settlements. Yet she is still worshipped as Mother. In Tantra, the Goddess is not only gentle. She is the totality of existence itself. The power that creates the world is the same power that dissolves it, and everything that arises from her ultimately returns back into her. And till the day, she is there, smiling, as the Kula-devi of Karmacharyas. Video: Dakshinkali, Pharping, Kathmandu.
