“‘Oppa” is what I learned in Korean class to mean an older brother or an older guy you’re close with, but people have turned it into something else 🤔

He’s 100% correct. There’s actual words to mean honey, baby, my love etc or even honorifics better used with a romantic partner, stick with those and leave Oppa alone it has its own meaning! 😂

My 80 yr old naturalized US citizen Korean mother HATES the use of oppa for a BF or romantic love interest. Low key, she gets irrationally mad at this. It’s hilarious.

Tbh I don't even think K dramas ruined it. Westerns misinterpreted it and ruined it.

he is true.As a Korean, ‘oppa’ just means an older guy a younger woman calls .there’s nothing inherently romantic about it .It’s just that in many couples the guy happens to be older, so the word ‘oppa’ gets used a lot. But foreigners who watch a lot of K-dramas often mistake it for a romantic term, even though it really isn’t

I dont think its k dramas that ruined it, its non korean k drama fans that ruined it. cause in kdramas they use it normally, as a way to address a man older then you when you are a woman, but because most fans of dramas are watching romance ones and they still call them oppa they decided it was some kind of flirty nickname. but yeah it is very similar to daddy
