@history.craftt: Vladimir Monomakh — a one-minute story by Dog Born in 1053, Vladimir was the son of Prince Vsevolod of Kiev and a Byzantine princess. From childhood he saw not comfort, but hard duty: endless disputes between princes, raids of the steppe nomads, and a Rus’ that was slowly falling apart. Instead of hiding behind palace walls, Monomakh spent his youth in the saddle, leading campaigns against the Polovtsians and defending border towns again and again. But he was not only a warrior. Monomakh understood that the main enemy of Rus’ was not just the steppe, but the quarrels between its own rulers. In 1097 he became one of the key figures at the Council of Liubech, where the princes agreed to stop destroying each other’s lands and to protect Rus’ together. For his toughness in war and his attempts at peace, he earned great respect among both warriors and common people. Near the end of his life he wrote the famous “Instruction to My Children”, where he spoke about responsibility, honest work, mercy and justice — not as pretty words, but as rules he tried to follow himself.
