@maisonrickie: Building on top of our series on Bourdieu, we use what we know to decode the world of art. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be able to go deep into topics like these so if you found this interesting, please let me know in the comments. And I promise, it’s not just going to be contemporary art. We will be covering all kinds of art (as well as other topics like design and architecture) so if contemporary isn’t your thing, just give me some time. In the meantime, I hope you learned something and maybe this sparks a brand new interest in art that you didn’t know you had!
If anything becomes art the moment we call it art, then the word stops meaning anything. A banana on a wall doesn’t expand human understanding… it just exposes how empty the label has become..

It bothers me so much that for the last hundred years artists have tried to merge philosophy and visual art when they are two fundamentally separate things. Philosophy is conceptual, art is material. Sure art can have symbolism and be thought-provoking, but if the actual art part of the art is gone, and there’s only philosophy left, then you can’t call it art.

my favourite thing about your content is that it's helped me realise how at peace I am with not being "in the know"
like I find everything so fascinating from an outsider's perspective

I think the best thing the middle class can do is to not care much about the banana on the wall. You might disagree, but I think it’s pretentious and lame. Love your videos!

The Duchamp urinal was brilliant when it was done in 1917. Now that 100+ years have passed, the wHaT iS aRt conversation just feels lazy and derivative

long story short: rich people spend a fckton of money on sht just for the giggles. 120k for someone really rich is not more expensive than a good night out. the rest of us are in awe just because we can't comprehend how does it feel to have this kinda power. nothing in the world can justify this, not even 'it is for the art'. they live off the exploitation of millions of people whereas the common folks can't buy their own home.

Well, I did gather my thoughts on this. Here they are 24x24” acrylic on Baltic birch galley cradled. Indignity. In my typical near abstract style. Offers over $120k?

Let’s remember that in Shakespeare’s plays comedians (jesters) were the only ones who could speak the truth without dying - that really advances the conversation

Its kind of like the tale of "the emperors clothes" … in the end the Comedian is actually stupid , and the "poor people" are still right , but in a world where they can’t prove it, it just emphasises the fact that money can buy anything … even facts and reality

a world where financial value, cultural value, meme value, and social attention have merged into one volatile currency, the banana is a totem of that merger…

No bro there is nothing to think about. This is stupid. And only happens when u have so much money u do not know what to do with. But hate the poor so spending it on a taped banana makes more sense.😑

I’m viewing art more on the emotional perspective. That’s why I’m really enjoying songs, painting, dance that build from the artist emotional state. But for that banana, I don’t see any emotional meaning, thus I believe it’s worthless.
