But getting inside is an extreme, claustrophobic challenge. The natural entrance to the cave is a tiny stone archway measuring less than 3 feet high. To squeeze through, visitors must lie completely flat on the wooden floor of a tiny rowboat. The boatman must hold onto a metal chain bolted to the rock wall and time the ocean swell perfectly. Slicing through the gap requires pulling the boat in at the exact micro-second the wave retreats. If he misses the window by a single second, the rising tide can slam the boat and its passengers directly into the low stone ceiling. Once safely inside, the glowing water looks artificial, but it is actually a brilliant optical illusion. High-intensity Mediterranean sunlight passes through a massive, completely submerged rock opening directly below the entrance. As the light filters through the crystal-clear seawater, the red wavelengths are absorbed, leaving only a brilliant, self-illuminating neon blue that lights up the cavern from below.
