He is protecting his workers from unlawful searches. The SAPS can't just stop and search without reasons. Anyway, the way the SAPS reacted was very unprofessional. The senior member should've explained their actions without shouting. But this is nothing strange, this is what you expect from government employees these days.

The duty of a police officer or metro officer does not include random stop-and-search operations without proper legal authority. A lawful search must either happen at an authorised roadblock/checkpoint with senior officials present, or the officer must have reasonable grounds to suspect a crime. Metro/traffic officers can stop vehicles to check licences, and if they find something illegal, they call SAPS or take you to the station. But SAPS officers are not allowed to randomly stop people and search them on the roadside without a warrant, proper suspicion, or a formally authorised roadblock. So the question is not whether they can stop you it is whether the stop and search was done lawfully. If there was no authorised roadblock, no reasonable suspicion, and no warrant, then the stop-and-search is not valid.

In terms of the Police Act, stop and search operation is mandatory. Weapons, drugs, wanted criminals and more has emanated from these duties.

The reality is that some police officers and metro officials end up in those positions because of connections, nepotism, or internal deals not because they were adequately trained. Those who went through proper training understand their responsibilities, the law, and the principle of serving and protecting the public. However, many of the ones placed through shortcuts do not follow correct procedure. They act outside their scope and forget that stop-and-search operations must follow legal requirements. Without a valid warrant or lawful grounds, they cannot simply stop and search people at random. Their role is to support lawful policing, not to abuse authority. Proper officers know the boundaries of their powers. Those who don’t were never prepared for the job in the first place.
