dp part 229 | foucault is rejecting one of our deepest cultural obsessions: the need to define ourselves. we’re constantly being asked “who are you?” what do you identify as? what’s your personality type? your star sign? your enneagram number? we act as though the self is something fixed, something we need to discover and then remain faithful to for the rest of our lives. but foucault is saying that’s not the point at all. the point isn’t to figure out who you are and then protect that identity like it’s sacred. the point is transformation. the point is to become someone different from who you were when you started. think about it. if you’re the same person at 40 that you were at 20, what have you actually learned? what experiences have actually changed you? foucault sees life as a process of perpetual self-creation, not self-discovery. this connects to something radical in his philosophy. he’s saying you’re not born with an essential self that you need to uncover. instead, you create yourself through your choices, your relationships, your work, your thinking. you’re not trapped by some predetermined nature. you’re free to transform, to experiment, to become something entirely new. and that freedom is both liberating and terrifying. this wisdom comes from a 1982 interview called “truth, power, self” where foucault was asked how he defined himself—as philosopher, historian, structuralist, marxist? his response was essentially: i don’t care about labels. in the full quote, he goes on to compare this to writing a book: “if you knew what you’d say at the end when you began, would you even have the courage to write it? the same applies to life and love. the game is worthwhile precisely because we don’t know where it will end.” foucault spent his career examining how power shapes who we think we are, how institutions tell us what’s normal, and how we can resist those forces to create ourselves anew. more foucault coming soon. #michelfoucault #foucault #postmodernism #philosophy #identity
