Learner’s drivers should not be a thing this day and age. There should be no accompanied driving. It’s medieval. Enrollment in driving school should be mandatory, minimum of 30 hours driving and theory, once done, you apply for test, theory first, if you pass, you’re on the road doing practical, same day. Vast majority of European countries do it. A dad is not a qualified instructor, or an uncle who got his driving license back in the day when they were giving them for free😂 I’m not saying he can’t drive, but that’s not the point. There should be no L drivers, no N drivers. You study theory, do your mandatory hours with driving school instructor, who is qualified and trained to teach others all ins and outs, then you go for test. No car needed, no insurance needed, all lessons are in driving school cars. So is the exam. According to RSA, 2 out of 5 most common road offences along speeding, mobile phones usage, seatbelts are Learner permit drivers driving alone, and them again not displaying L sign. Of course they’re in hiding, process of getting a license here it medieval. You can literally fail a test and still drive home🫣 money making machine for insurance, and half of the people on the road, never had a test.. time for changes.

Sure 90% of the driving test in Ireland is done in a 50km zone..Not a lot of danger there..

Testers here would never allow that. They love the power. Not only that it would be harder to manipulate the passes rate.

100% safer.. will cost the learner more but safety is the issue. In Portugal, learners are not allowed on the road in their own car, no L plates around!

Testers should have a duty of care and press the brakes if in a instructors car to prevent a crash but it’s not always the case 😔

I think it should be introduced in secondary schools as a two year leaving cert subject! It shoukd be funded by the goverment , so every child has the same start when driving , there learning about how to be safe on the roads at an early age while also leaving school with a life skill! And passing the test can be extra points towards your leaving cert. A bit thing for learning to drive is money and if one child’s parents can afford lessons and a car for there chikd it gives them a head start in life rather than another child’s who’s parents maybe don’t have the money for lessons etc just my thoughts

Idk, from 2023-2025 there were only 100 crashes out of 500,000 tests. Of those only 22 resulted in injury and no deaths.

as an ex tester, I don't think this is a good idea. the idea of the test is to see how a person can handle a car in a situation on their own. what happens when that person isn't there to protect them? A safer system would be for us ADIs to have the final say on a test, we put people in that we think are ready. This would sort a good few issues. 1. less people turning up for test that are as you described - not ready. 2. its a marker for us ADIs to be measured on. if we are continually sending in shit drivers, we get a check test. 3. the waiting times would drop as only people who are truly ready will be at the test centre.

I’m amazed the union that represents er testers allow tests to be undertaken in cars with no dual controls. A lot of the private cars being used are junkers

this is wild. an examiner is more than able to step in if intervention is required but that's generally end of test anyway. how can they make proper observations from the back seat? In the UK the instructor can sit in the back to help oversee and keep the pupil calm . honestly seems you have more serious problems if people are turning up for test and endangering examiners safety

hypothetically this does sound safer, however given the examiner can terminate the test already on the grounds of safety this probably negates most of the risk. how many stories are there about serious accidents during driving tests?

observation would be hampered and if a test is going that badly the instructor can end it and return to the test centre at any stage....
