I expect Kathy Hochul to win New York’s governor’s race comfortably, despite how much she struggled in 2022. She initially became governor after Andrew Cuomo resigned, so that election was her first opportunity to win the office herself. She was still trying to establish her own political identity after taking over during the Cuomo scandals, and Lee Zeldin proved to be a strong Republican challenger. Hochul ultimately won by only about six points, which was unusually close for New York. However, I think the circumstances are considerably better for her this year. Her approval has improved, and she’s been working more closely with Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other parts of the Democratic coalition. I think that cooperation helps her bring together voters who might not be particularly enthusiastic about her individually. She doesn’t necessarily need a huge personal following if enough New Yorkers see her as the better option and want someone who will push back against Trump. Bruce Blakeman should still perform reasonably well in Republican areas, especially around his home base in Nassau County and elsewhere on Long Island. I think he can appeal to some moderate voters who remain frustrated with Hochul, but I don’t see him recreating the same opportunity Zeldin had in 2022. New York’s Democratic advantage, combined with the more favorable national environment I’m expecting, makes his path much harder. Ultimately, I think Hochul’s improved political position and a more unified Democratic electorate will produce a much stronger result than her first election. Blakeman can keep parts of the state competitive, but I don’t think that will be enough to overcome Democratic margins in New York City and the other urban areas. I currently have Kathy Hochul winning by 17.4 percentage points, keeping the governor’s office in Democratic hands. #newyork #kathyhochul #trump #politics #midtermelections
