Typhoon Champi battered Taiwan on Saturday, October 24, bringing destructive winds, torrential rainfall and widespread disruption, leaving at least one person dead and 527 injured. According to Taiwan’s emergency authorities, a man was swept away by powerful waves off Liuqiu Island, while hundreds of others sustained injuries during the storm. Once classified as a super typhoon and considered one of the strongest Pacific storms of 2026, Champi generated wind gusts reaching 227 km/h in coastal areas, uprooting trees, damaging buildings and bringing down power lines. More than 288,000 households experienced electricity outages, although power had been restored to most affected homes by Saturday. The storm also severely disrupted transportation, with 259 flights cancelled on Saturday, following nearly 1,000 cancellations on Friday. Authorities across northern and central Taiwan, including Taipei, ordered schools and offices to remain closed for a second consecutive day as emergency crews worked to clear debris and restore essential services. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration reported that the typhoon was weakening as it moved northward away from the island, with its projected path taking it towards China’s eastern coastline and eventually southern Japan. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have mobilised emergency response teams and prepared rescue equipment as coastal regions brace for strong winds and heavy rainfall. Despite the storm weakening, officials continue to warn residents about dangerous coastal conditions and high waves.
