No one is more annoying than people who read the book. Like why would I want the exact same thing from the book in the movie😭. They are so insufferable

As someone who often "has read the book", I agree, a film can be a bad adaptation but still be a good film on its own. Often changes are necessary for the story to work in the different medium. Though it's quite common for adaptations to just be bad films and thematically miss the point xD

If it’s called an “adaptation” and uses the same name then it should be trying to stay as true as possible to the source material. Instead they should just say it’s “inspired by” and give it a new name since they’re making an original story with parts they like from the book/ comic/ etc. otherwise it’s disrespectful to the author, the original work, and its fans

I think most commenters here have misunderstood what he’s saying, which is that you can’t use information that’s only available in the book to explain something that happens in the film. The film has to stand up on its own, without needing the book to prop it up.

BUUUT if the creator doesnt understand why the project failed and the book is still popular...its because they didnt figure out why it was popular in the first place. (Witcher)

When I say I like man of steel more then Superman 2025 mostly cuz of the darker tone the only argument against me is that the books are goofy 😂😂😂

If a story is part of the literary canon like Frankenstein we can safely assume that most people have read the book or know the general plot beats. It's not uncommon to teach it in schools. That's the whole concept of the literary canon. That's the whole idea behind literacy. It's not an innate talent, you have to have done your school work. Apparently, a lot of critics have not.

Why I think dune part 1 is a terrible adaptation because I should have to know all the names races etc before watching to understand it

i like accurate adaptations but i dont mind changing stuff (again, its an adaptation) but i really hate when the whole purpose and identity of the book gets lost in translation

Fight Club is good as a book and a movie. they're linked but the book has a completely different tone, and I like both.

If the changes are made with a clear live for the original and/or actually add to the story or fix it in some way - I'm all for it. Unfortunately, in 99% of the cases the changes are done by shitting in the original, removing all the complexity from characters and plots and all they achieve is ruining the whole story. If you hated the original so badly - why even touch it?

It depends. Sometimes characters are widely misunderstood, not because they are written bad, but because you don‘t have to set up the motivation for every side character, but the book oftentimes adds to that. Not that a book should be necessary, but can rule out misunderstandings

Also the book should make the point it’s trying to make. I shouldn’t have to read a book to understand a movie
