So she’s actually half Korean then. Her mom’s ethnicity is Korean, her nationality is Japanese, but the daughter I’m guessing grew up in America. So she’s half-Korean not half Japanese

I've wanted to love Japan since I was a teenager but visiting and learning more about the country just reminds me how incredibly racist they are as a country. Not that I can judge too harshly as an American, but it did heavily curb my enthusiasm for the culture.

people of korean decent born in japan had to register with a foreign passport in japan until the late 80s. you're not really Japanese to them unless you're ethnically Japanese.

For anyone who might like to understand this a bit better there is a great fiction book called Pachinko which is a multi generational story of a zainichi family in Japan

Japan invaded Korea and did possible atrocities and when Koreans moved or were taken to Japan they lived under extreme racism and had to register as Koreans even for successive generations. They didn’t have birthright so could never be Japanese but In many cases they would be North Koreans and couldn’t go home either.

Fred Armisen found out his grandfather was a Korean living in Japan. He always thought he was Japanese but his grandfather had to hide his identity because of hate towards Koreans

Her parents had to moved to Japan because the japanese made living in Korea horrible. After the invasion, coming back to Korea wasn't as easy since many of the Koreans in Japan had life and work over there and risked not being able to come back after... it's really sad and really complicated, many of them didn't want to leave.

Japanese people don't count Japanese who grew up outside of Japan as Japanese .. it's either one way or no way. and it is very sad that there is such a poor attitude.. I remember protests against zainichi around Oosaka a decade ago . they are already integrated into society... but still brings problems
