It’s typically a trauma response caused by CPTSD, often revolving around abuse and neglect from a parent or family member that is supposed to be in immediate care of a child. It gives them a sense of control over a part of their life when they had no control. It may seem weird to those who are lucky enough to not go through that kind of trauma

Like it or not, some people cope with their trauma in ways that might seem odd to society. I just wish people were more open minded about these things, because once you actually understand where it comes from, it’s honestly sad. I hope he's doing better now
