The Russia-Ukraine war did not begin out of nowhere in February 2022. The full-scale invasion was the result of a long collision between Russia’s security demands and Ukraine’s determination to move toward the West. Ukraine became independent in 1991 after the Soviet Union collapsed. In 2008, NATO said Ukraine and Georgia would become members in the future. That was a political commitment, not an immediate accession plan, but Moscow treated the prospect of NATO expanding farther east as a serious security threat. After Russia seized Crimea in 2014 and fighting began in the Donbas, Ukraine moved further toward Europe and NATO. Ukraine restored NATO membership as a strategic goal in 2017, put that goal in its constitution in 2019, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved a 2020 national security strategy aimed at NATO membership. Before the February 2022 invasion, Ukraine was not a NATO member. It had no membership invitation, no Membership Action Plan, and no timetable to join. That distinction matters. Ukraine was actively seeking NATO; it was not about to receive Article 5 protection. Vladimir Putin publicly cited NATO expansion, the Donbas, and what he called “denazification.” He also repeatedly argued that Ukraine was historically part of Russia. Russia’s initial drive toward Kyiv indicated an effort to remove Zelenskyy’s government and force Ukraine back into Moscow’s sphere of control. Russia launched the full-scale invasion and bears responsibility for that decision. But the strategic conflict was real. The U.S. and allies then committed weapons, intelligence support, sanctions, and aid. Through June 2026, the United States had committed more than $68.2 billion in defense articles and services to Ukraine. The conservative policy question is not whether Russia invaded. It is what America’s end state is, what accountability and conditions apply to further support, and why Europe should not carry more of the burden. #ukraine #russia#news#miltok#update
