I find this very interesting. Now apologies at the directness of this, but I’m super intrigued at how your parents or parent raised you? It seems like as you do now, you had quite a decent sense of self and developed strong internal validation perhaps supported by a very open and loving home where gender norms weren’t strictly applied? Probably not the best way I could phrase my thoughts/question this late in the day but the psych student in me is intrigued and I feel like I’m going to go off on a research dive on the variables that contribute to certain outcomes from bullying 😂

my son has very long hair. in prep (when he was 5) a number of students continually, intentionally misgendered him. at first he didn't realise they were being malicious. many adult men in our friend circle have long hair. there was only 1 girl in his class with brown hair (all other girls were blonde, as is my son), and she was one of the kids being nasty to him (her parents were also), I was there when he hit a light bulb moment thinking she meant because of his hair colour - he was carefully reassuring her that it's OK no one thinks she's a boy because she doesn't have blonde hair, people can have any colour hair! she got so mad, and he was so confused, because he thought he was being kind. he's now 8 and I've seen him sit down with kids of all ages explaining that hair length has nothing to do with your gender and people can wear their hair anyway they want to. it's been at least a year since I've heard about anyone at school calling him a girl.
