Lilly allowed us all the opportunity to go back in time to a life we lived prior to our current life. To revisit our first love. To bid farewell. To see through Casey’s eyes, not Jordan’s. And maybe feel a peace to let go off a past we never fully let go of. Masterpiece. I’m dehydrated.

As a mother whose only child was stillborn, I can relate to the grieving of what if’s and what could’ve been. I was 26 when I gave birth and now at 40 and no living children I deeply understand the loss of motherhood and the loss of a partner in my child’s father. They say there are three great losses in life that may deeply wound you forever. The loss of a spouse/partner through death, the loss of a spouse/partner through divorce, and the loss of a child. Having been through two of those I hope I have prepared myself for the day I lose my heart’s love after the passing of my spouse/partner. Luckily I have the strong belief that our hearts have an infinite capacity for love. Even if we suffer great loss that leaves the heart like Swiss cheese, we still have room for new love to form and grow.

I think the pace of the prose was a great way to depict how quickly our choices can change the course of our lives and the weight of these “simple actions” as well as our messy emotions that keep us from true fulfillment and having to really look at grieving those choices and the what ifs of it all.
