Cost me $45,000 to build my house. I kept everything simple. I built what I needed not what impressed everyone else. I randomly said ima build a house and everyone laughed. Took me 57 days to come up with the cash. Took me 2 and half years to build it by myself with no help. This is my 3rd winter and still have never had anyone to come visit me. Not even my mom. Because I asked for help and nobody would ever show up so I made it clear nobody was welcome in my home.

As someone who installs the doors and windows in new construction builds. DO NOT GO WITH LOWES OR HOME DEPOT products.

Y’all chill, she’s just trying to give tips and share the experience she had. When you are new to the building process, a lot of these things are unexpected because you simply just don’t know. Same with us, I always thought closing cost came with buying a home not building.

If you want double doors, don’t go to Home Depot or Lowe’s. Find a real door supplier that will custom order you one from the manufacturer. I did this, had to wait 6 weeks, but it was less than half the cost of everywhere else. Like instead of 7k it was $2500 installed then I paid a few hundred to have it stained.

A good builder would have done his homework and made this all clear up front. I always try to talk people out of the French doors. They’re expensive, they leak, they’re not as secure, hardly used and the hardware costs more.

I wouldn’t order doors from Lowe’s or Home Depot. Look for a specific door store (they do exist). You’ll get better pricing and substantially higher quality.

Anyone who says you should have known forgets how much you learn when you’re going through the process! We had so many surprises around the way or things we thought would be “normal” but were actually upgrades

Always add sales tax on materials in your original budget. It could range from 10-30 grand
