Sunshine & Existential Dread :
I say this gently, but perhaps it is a good thing - because if people are put off by the reality of how hard it can be then they shouldn’t be adopting. I also think it shows that adoption isn’t the answer and that adoption as it currently is in this country is outdated and needs complete reform.

I’m afraid my niece, now 16, is not a good story and she has been a part of our family since 5 days old.

Adoption and ASN :
I adopted 10 years ago and we have an amazing family, both are asn but not severe and both go to mainstream school. Kids are 10 and 11 now and they are the best kids who are thriving xx

Life Of An Adoptee :
I think it’s about getting the balance, because society tends to see adoption as a happy fairytale ending, and so there needs to be that balance where it shows the difficulties and the triumphs.

We are 14 years in with our 15 year old adopted daughter and adopting her is the best thing we ever did. She's amazingly grounded considering but also a typical teen, so we've had our ups and downs. She's currently being assessed for ADHD but we are navigating this together. Being a parent, however you get there can be hard, and there are no guarantees with bio children or adopted, but she has bought so much joy to us and we're so proud of her.

I'm not at the teen phase, we have a 3,6 and 8 year old. We have accessed some post adoption support. Sure, we battle regularly with school to understand but on the whole, we have been supported. They all have additional needs but I wouldn't ever change our journey to parenthood!

I’m not an adopter but an adoptee and I had a great experience, overall. My mum definitely could have done with some mental health support getting through the guilt/shame of not being able to have her own children which did sometimes come out to us kids. But overall it was good. Met my birth family when I turned 21 (18 years ago now) and I can hand on heart say it made me more grateful for my adoptive parents and I’m so glad they were able to give me the life I had, as my life would have looked very different if i hadn’t been adopted

My eldest adopted child is now 20yrs old. I adopted him aged 3. He has autism, adhd and attachment disorder so it has been challenging at times (I cannot lie). However he is my baby. My first child. I am so proud of him. He is a wonderful young man who even though he struggled every single day throughout school he has gone on to complete a 3yr college course and was accepted into University. And is now enjoying Uni life and part time work to save up for a car 🥰

I am so sad about the recent negative coverage and feel it hasn't been fairly balanced with stories like ours. Our daughter has been a dream come true. Had to go through neonatal drug detox, then came to us straight from hospital and is pure joy - endlessly funny, clever, active and loving.

I am also interested in stories of how adopted children are in their teens. I’ve heard only not so good outcomes and this is my biggest concern. I know it will be challenging at times…

Summer :
I don't think its about happy or unhappy stories, its about reporting reality for many children with disrupted childhoods. The support isn't there post adoption, leading to adoption breakdown/return to care. Services don't acknowledge the needs of adopted children. Outcomes need to be improved, but won't be whilst parents adopt with no or poor post adoption support. Prospective adopters need to know the reality for many adoptees in order to support the future of the adoptees.
