What is compression ratio? I watched a Jay Leno video where he asked a Porsche 356 owner about their engine mods. One mod was “fancy” cylinder heads, supposedly boosting the compression ratio. Jay seemed impressed by their new compression ratio, but it left me wondering—what does a higher compression ratio actually mean and why was Jay impressed? If you’re curious too, here’s what I found out… Compression is key for an engine to generate power. It is created by making a sealed container. Without it, when your fuel air mixture ignites, instead of the explosion forcing the piston down and rotating the crankshaft, it would just leak out the gaps, your piston wouldn’t move and your crankshaft wouldn’t rotate. The engine wouldn’t work very well if at all! This is why an engine having compression is important. So what is an engine’s compression ratio? It is the ratio of an engine’s uncompressed volume (the piston at the bottom of its stroke) and its compressed volume (the piston at the top of its stroke). In simple terms, the higher the compression ratio the more potential power an engine can generate. This is ultimately why a higher compression ratio is more “impressive” than a lower one. Trouble’s engine now has a compression ratio of 9.3:1. Higher than her original spec of 8.5:1. Cylinder head volume is a key component to calculating compression ratio. Here I am carefully measuring Trouble’s cylinder head volume using a burette and sheet of Perspex. From factory, the heads were originally stamped up as 60 cubic centermeters but any machining to the cylinder head at the head to barrel seat can reduce this volume increasing Trouble’s compression ratio. It was important to measure as a too high compression ratio can cause engine trouble such as pre ignition or worse, damage due over heating or excessive stress. What compression ratio does your engine have? #classiccar #engine #enginerebuild #porsche #projectcar
