One of the reasons abusive relationships can become so psychologically complicated is that abuse doesn’t necessarily mean someone is cruel every minute of every day. A person can behave abusively and later apologize. They can show remorse, make changes, become affectionate, or temporarily behave in ways that resemble the partner you hoped they would be. That improvement can create something incredibly powerful: hope. It can also make the situation harder to interpret. If the person you fear is suddenly the person comforting you, apologizing to you, or trying to change, your brain has conflicting information to process. This doesn’t mean every apology is manipulation, and it doesn’t mean behavioral change is impossible. People can change harmful behaviors. But a temporary period of improvement doesn’t automatically erase an established pattern of abuse. That’s why “the cycle of abuse” can be an oversimplification. Domestic violence doesn’t follow one predictable sequence, and there isn’t always a neat progression from violence → apology → calm → violence. Patterns of power and control can look very different from relationship to relationship. In hindsight, I can see how those weeks of change gave me something I desperately wanted to believe in: Maybe this could finally be the marriage I thought I was going to have. This is a retelling of my lived experience and how I understand these events now, not a diagnosis or assessment of anyone involved. Please take care when listening to this series.#DomesticViolenceAwareness #traumabondrecovery #ialmostdidntsurvive #SurvivorStory #truestory
