You mean European Portuguese, right? Because brazilians do something a little different. Instead of having a big word that you pronounce just half of it but keep it written exactly the same, we shorten the words and create variations of it that are spoken and written differently. For example, we take "para" and make it "pra". Two syllables turn into just one and the pronunciation turns the sentences more fluid.
