My mom was a school bus driver. They have to do that to open the doors and listen for trains. Buses are longer than cars and the probability of them getting stuck is higher I think?

They stop BEFORE the tracks and the door opening is because sometimes the train signal poles may fail and the bus may not hear the train coming hence the door opening and stopping BEFORE the tracks. Even if the train doesn’t run it’s a safety precaution

They say it’s to listen out to make sure there isn’t a train coming- but it don’t make sense cause they stop so close if the rail came down last minute (like a malfunction or bus came at the worst time) it would hit the bus?? Then what?? This always confused me too 😭 like how it it any different from regular cars or 18 wheelers? I only understand when it’s a stop sign at the rail road and not an actual bar and flashing lights. (I live in a small town there’s a few of those)
