@aircrashbriefs: United Flight 173 was approaching Portland in 1978 when the crew noticed a problem with the landing gear. A small indicator light wasn’t showing it was locked. The pilots began circling the city to troubleshoot the issue… but while focusing on the landing gear, they forgot about their fuel. For more than an hour, the crew discussed the gear problem, tested systems, and tried to confirm if the wheels were safe — yet no one monitored the fuel levels. Minutes later, all three engines flamed out from fuel exhaustion. The DC-8 crashed into a suburban neighborhood, killing 10 people. The landing gear? It had been locked the entire time.
