I’m can tell you….as someone who is married into an enmeshed family system, this question does not work. I have asked this question 50,000 different ways to get my husband to see the problem with how his family treats me. He can tell you all the logically sound reasons for why they should not treat his wife that way. But at the end of the day, the attachment to them is too strong, and he cannot stand up to them and protect me when it really matters. It is beyond infuriating.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. You can be immature and “narcissistic” without being DSM diagnosable. We all have traits. This about trying to help them make sense of the behaviours and how to address them from a different or warped angle. I get you!!

Absolutely… I look at my daughter, would I tolerate this behavior if it was directed at her.. when I see a person saying “ how do you decide if they are emotionally immature..etc” I have to imagine they believe that our discernment of “ harmful” is broken. It’s so dismissive.. everyone has some narcissistic behaviors everyone makes mistakes.. but I believe intrinsically, that most people can tell when it’s just difficult or just a mistake and what is continuing behavior… that is targeted to diminish or hurt another. Most people, can handle normal conflict and understand the humanity of a parent.. there is a difference between this is annoying and or this is harmful. My mother is a difficult person, and that’s ok.. however, her way of speaking to me was demeaning and disrespectful.. her choice to use me to regulate her feelings and negating or dismissing my feelings, was more than a mistake. I would never treat my husband or child this way, or frankly even a stranger.
