@andromedapeters: “There is no question of who Ghana is at Miss Universe!” “I love how you rep Africa!” - my lovely African sisters told me at Miss Universe which to me were the biggest compliments ever! 🥰 One of my biggest goals in life especially as a Ghanaian raised in the diaspora was to change the narratives that the Western world has not only of Ghana but Africa as a whole. Growing up most of the kids in my class only thought Africa consisted of what they saw in charity commercials which couldn’t be far from the truth. In my interview I was asked to describe Ghana in one word…the word I chose was “rich”. Ghana and the CONTINENT of Africa is rich in culture, rich in resources, rich in values, rich in family, rich in knowledge, rich in education, rich in intellect, rich in cuisine, rich in health, rich in longevity… My outfits sparked conversations with media and more importantly Thai people and international tourists. “What are you wearing?” “What is kente?” “What is ankara?” “What is the difference?” “What are waist beads?” If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ll see that many of my looks familiar because they were right from my closet! I predominantly wore Ghanaian and Nigerian designers that I will be bragging on in their own post. My intention was to highlight our talent and creativity on the Miss Universe stage and use fashion as an opportunity to inform an international audience about Ghana and the beauty of Africa as a whole. I would not change my brand just to go to Miss Universe. I’ve been wearing braids since I was 5 years old, I’ve been wearing various African prints since before I could walk. I would go to #MissUniverse being true to myself and true to my culture and use the platform of Miss Universe to continue to show the world how rich Ghana 🇬🇭 and the continent of Africa is and -help- change the narrative to show the world that Black excellence is world wide!
