When I (USA) visited Stockholm, I was charmed and delighted by the fact that the subway system ads were for local authors, some events, local candy brands, and public health. The fact that it wasn't predominantly megacorps trying to sell GenAI and VPNs was FUN to me.

the idea that ads could be something that isnt part of life is so foreign to us. in the nba they have something called “tv timeouts” where every so often a timeout must be taken for ads if neither coach calls for one

I call it “ambient stress.” As an American now living in the Netherlands, the U.S. is LOUD in ways most people don’t understand. Your take on advertising is brilliant, and demonstrates just how loud capitalism is: it’s the background music to every dance, and the foreground music of most scenes. It’s ubiquitous. Also other categories of ambient stress: car traffic, gun violence, war mongering news stories, debt, having to pay to enjoy anything (no third spaces). It’s an exhausting place to live. 🙏 Thanks for shedding light on it so acutely.
