A seaweed compound blocked DHT almost as hard as finasteride. In a test tube. Here's the part that gets left out of that headline. Dieckol — found in the edible brown seaweed Ecklonia cava — inhibited the DHT-producing enzyme 5-alpha-reductase by 95.1% in a 2012 lab study, right alongside finasteride's 94.6% (Kang et al.). Applied to mice, the extract also triggered visible hair growth activity. Then it was tested properly: real human hair follicles, grown outside the body (Shin et al., 2016). The crude polyphenol extract grew follicles significantly longer than control. But isolated dieckol — the exact molecule behind that 95.1% number — didn't reproduce the effect in human tissue. This is a pattern, not a one-off. Onion's quercetin does the same thing: blocks the enzyme in a tube, loses the effect in living cells. Enzyme assays are cheap and fast.
