@mom.behind.the.scenes: When parents try to control every choice their child makes, it might look like protection… but it often creates something far riskier: a child who can’t trust themselves. Kids learn decision-making by making decisions- messy ones, brave ones, imperfect ones. And really ugly ones.
I watched my parents raise 4 children. one is an addict. its not always a parenting problem.

I had a middle school drug abuser. I THOUGHT I could 'oversee' and try harder I could 'fix' him. I was wrong. And for a long time I had so much guilt... self and extended family induced. My heart bleeds for you and your daughter. And I am sad for both our sons. Mine never SAed anyone that I know of...but there were a couple violence incidents against others...tons against us. Just wanted to stand in sorrow with you. [Mine is now 30... and probably about to head to prison again, currently in jail for the 20th(?) or so time.]

My parents raised 3 kids. One is a prominent psychologist. One spent 7 years in prison. The line between brilliance and mental illness is incredibly thin.

Why do mothers see success of their kids as own accomplishments but never their mistakes as their responsibility ?

It is making me crazy how people are blaming Rob and Michelle Reiner for their own murder. I keep hearing “what did those awful parents do to make him murder them”

After a point kids do what they want and hide it from their parents. It’s all a part of separating and individuation. That’s being human

You set boundaries for your children from Birth. The first 5 years of their life is the most important. If you dont set boundaries and establish values very early in life they dont learn to self regulate, tolerate, respect their parents, teacher and adults. It all reflects on decision making as they grow up. Natural consequences and accountability even as young toddlers is important while their brain is developing rapidly.

Parents are sometimes responsible for their kids issues. My little brother died due to substance absue and in my opinion is was mostly our parents fault. They argued a lot, physicly and mentaly abused each other and us but from the outside we looked like a normal family. So yeah, it's sometimes parents fault.

Many of these bad decisions are rooted in a neurological/ psychiatric problem. Even with the best and most timely medical care, many psychiatric problems are difficult to treat, and there is both a scarcity of care and a scarcity of support for families with mentally ill children.
