MLE is also referred to as Black British English. We’ve reached a point where we now have “Reverse Code-Switching”. MLE/BBE was born in Inner Ldn Black communities due to being marginalized for the class and race. We now have the ppl who belong to the group that marginalizes Black ppl mimicking the accent/dialect of the v ppl they marginalize. Proximity to Blackness whilst not being Black has finally become extremely profitable. It’s a symbol of a problematic understanding of Blackness within English society and you’re right to feel strange. However ppl will say “It’s not that deep” and any intellectual push within this topic will be derailed. The correct question is “Why does society so badly want to mimic the dialect/accent of a marginalized ethnic minority group without addressing the problems this group faces in society?”
