To me the answer is obvious and in the show. The hive talks about individuals in the past tense. "this individual went by John Cena" John Cena is gone, and he never had an option to stay.

I think all you need to see to understand the hive is the first person infected, by all accounts she SHOULD have still been herself, she was theoretically a hive mind of one, so if personality persists in the hive she should’ve still been herself, but we KNOW she wasn’t, she was gone, and the hive was born, and if the first person in the hive was gone, then they’re all gone

I think the discourse comes down to whether you view it as a virus that has taken over the minds of every person on earth, or you're not actually paying attention to the show. Vince Gilligan compared them to the infected in The Last of Us and The Walking Dead. Bc the only way you see it as one mind working in harmony with no other motives outside of the best interests of humanity is if you're taking what the hive mind says at face value and not actually looking with a skeptical mind at what they're doing or how they've behaved.

Everyone is an individual but they are in constant communication. There's no variation in personality or beliefs because everyone is exposed to the same knowledge and reasoning, and most of not all people land on what they consider the most logical conclusion. They aren't just hearing all thoughts and beliefs, they understand them in the same way and reach a collective conclusion. It's all religion, but that includes atheists, who generally base their beliefs in logic and reasoning. They consume nutrient drinks because it's more efficient. They reclaim nutrients from the dead because it's more efficient. They care about the environment because it's logical. There's no more bigotry because it's illogical. They don't lie to the remainders because it wouldn't be fair and there's no reason, there are no secrets or deception in the collective. But it's also a TV show and there needs to be conflict or an issue to overcome, so they refuse to harm any life, even fruit which is meant to be picked. Some people are acting like the collective is a consciousness that overtook humanity, but it just is humanity.

They talk about individuals as a past tense. You can’t talk to individuals. The hive mind can just act like the individuals sometime because they have all the memories. The poker table scene really showed that.

they are not individuals ... it's a single entity.. there so much evidence.. for example that's why when the entity broke up with Carol... it did not allow any of its vessels to interact with carol... because each body is a vessel for the one entire conscious.
