Just to clarify, the “low-shedding” trait that many people associate with doodles comes from the Poodle side of the mix. However, terms like “non-shedding” and “hypoallergenic” are often misunderstood and can be misleading. As a groomer, I can confidently say that no dog is truly non-shedding, and there is no breed that is guaranteed to be completely hypoallergenic.
For example, a Goldendoodle is a mix between a Golden Retriever…a breed with a dense undercoat that sheds, and a Poodle. Because of this, coat type, shedding levels, and maintenance needs can vary significantly from dog to dog. While some doodles may shed less than others, they still shed. I’ve groomed countless Poodles and doodles, and during brushing, bathing, and blow-drying, hair absolutely comes out.
If someone is specifically looking for the traits commonly advertised in doodles, it’s worth considering a Poodle. Poodles are a purebred breed with more predictable coat characteristics, and their coats are often easier to manage because they are not mixed with breeds that have shedding double coats. They are also highly intelligent, versatile, and active dogs. In fact, Poodles were originally bred as sporting and retrieving dogs, making them excellent companions for active families and individuals.
