Laid down in 1936 and commissioned in 1940, she was one of the most powerful and famous battleships of World War II. Notable service: Took part in Operation Rheinübung (May 1941) alongside the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen. Engaged British forces in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, where Bismarck’s gunfire detonated HMS Hood’s magazines, sinking the British battlecruiser within minutes. Subsequently pursued by the Royal Navy across the North Atlantic. Disabled by a torpedo strike from British Swordfish aircraft (which jammed her rudder), leaving her unable to maneuver. Surrounded and overwhelmed by British battleships and cruisers; sunk on 27 May 1941. Postwar fate: Her wreck was discovered in 1989 by Robert Ballard at a depth of about 4,700 m in the North Atlantic. The hull remains on the seafloor.
