My opening is my MC sneaking into a citadel to steal a magic plant. I'm having issues with showing her lie >.<

I think another reason why so many books fall flat (entirely, not just the opening) is because everyone is trying to push out books before the books have had time to mature. the really good books I've read often came from authors who worked on them for over a year (or more) and reworked and reworked them seeking perfection. they didn't reach perfection but there was a point where they knew in their souls they had exhausted all the potential they could give to the story and that it was ready even if they weren't. at that point it accumulated so much of their emotions and experiences from years of writing, their personal lives' fluctuations that it was nearly impossible for those books to not have magnetism, whether their openings were catchy or surprisingly boring. as a reader (my favorite part of books) and a writer (my not so favorite part), the best works were like a stew made over the course of hours vs one that was made in an hour. both can be good but one leaves you with a ghostly memory of something you might not find anywhere else

Okay okay, my opening is the protagonist entering the prison that she is being held in. The lie would be that none of the inmates are actually bad people, but rather good (the warden is paranoid of their powers and wants to shut it down before anything happens). Her goal is to free herself and the others and prevent the warden from continuing his reign. This is where I am struggling, impact. Do I actually start the story with her basic life AND THEN being forced to go to the prison? Or should the impact BE the first day of the prison experience? Choice, I can kind of get that down but one question about it. Does the choice HAVE to be in the beginning? Like would it set up the rest of the story because of something they did?

Do you need to include all the 4 points or just some of them?

I scrapped an old prologue I made and deemed imperfect but it had all of these things🥹

I have a question how long do I have to include these things in my opening I’m writing a script and the “day to remember” happens like around 10 minutes into the first episode

okay, is it 100% necessary for the character to believe a lie? does the story seem unfulfilled if the mc does not.

How quickly should you hit these 4 points in the beginning of the story? In the first few paragraphs or is within the first chapter ok?

Action is one thing I struggle with. But your explanation shows that even a passive character has to have some agency. Thank you.

Her lie. The trade deal she's worked on will fix issues with little side effect. She can find a way to fix anything. Goal. To get her deal signed. this will lead to jobs, and safety for her nation. But they will provide the ruling nation with resources. Ties into her lie. Impact - she's worked for months dealing, talking, negotiating. But today is the day that things will be signed. Choice- when the deal falls apart to travel to the capital to try and salvage it.

Love this. I typically have opened my books with a scene and monologue at the end of act 2

Honestly, I disagree. most things I read have great openings and the rest of the story or book has had little attention and fails the set up.

My MC is moving into a new town and is cursed with invisibility. The child next door sees him and gets scared by him. My MC believes his invisibility stops him from connecting with people even though he wants to. He has to choose between trying to show the neighboring child he isn’t scary or avoiding the awkward situation all together by avoiding the family and the community connection they could’ve had.

I have a story that opens with my MC filming a scene (they're an actor). It's the last scene of the day and they're heading home afterwards.
