@sacramentourbanmedia916: The Trump administration on Tuesday unveiled a proposed settlement with the state of Missouri that could push millions of borrowers currently protected by a Biden-era payment pause back into active repayment. According to the U.S. Department of Education, student loan borrowers who are still sitting in the SAVE Plan forbearance will soon have to choose a different repayment program. The agency said the shift stems from the ongoing legal stalemate surrounding SAVE, which has been frozen since February after the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Biden overstepped his authority in creating the plan. More than 7.6 million borrowers remain in the SAVE forbearance as of July, federal officials reported. Under the proposed agreement, the lawsuits against SAVE would be dropped in exchange for the Education Department agreeing to stop enrolling new borrowers in the program and to transition all existing participants into other “lawful repayment plans.” Education analyst Mark Kantrowitz said the settlement would likely push borrowers out of the SAVE forbearance early next year—much earlier than expected, considering President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill” had set SAVE’s official end date for July 1, 2028. Republican-led states argued in court that Biden structured SAVE as a backdoor attempt to erase student debt after the Supreme Court struck down his broader cancellation program in 2023. Their lawsuits targeted two major features of SAVE: its historically low monthly payments and faster loan forgiveness for borrowers with smaller balances. This proposed deal arrives just four months after the Education Department resumed charging interest to those who remained in the SAVE forbearance.#viral #fyp
