Another win for wildlife on Hōlanikū 🐥 During routine monitoring, the team encountered a mōlī (Laysan Albatross) chick entangled in derelict fishing line, wrapped tightly around its bill and feet. Entanglements like this can quickly become life-threatening, restricting movement, feeding, and growth. With careful, trained intervention, the line was safely removed, and the chick was able to return to its nest—free from immediate danger. In cases like this, adults often accidentally bring debris back—sometimes with prey still attached—and feed it to their chicks. Albatross feed their young by regurgitating a mix of partially digested prey and nutrient-rich stomach oil. Indigestible material, like plastic, can accumulate in the chick’s stomach and later be expelled as a bolus—but not all debris makes it out. In many cases, plastic remains inside, leading to injury, starvation, or death. Even in one of the most remote places on Earth, marine debris continues to pose a serious threat.
