In retrospect, Atem probably got cooked here. Like yes, Atem is a good duelist, but Kaiba almost beat DSOD Yugi who has much better cards and is way more skilled than DM Yugi who already beat Atem with ALL THREE GOD CARDS 😭.

It's implied this was a one way trip for him. Kaiba built the technology to get there and would know if he could get back to the world of the living or not. Personally I think his version of a perfect after life is playing duel monsters with the Pharoah for the rest of time.

I’m not a fan of this ending as it takes away the plot of the movie the whole point of yugi vs Kaiba was to show kaiba that Yugi was the true king of games not atem, so why go back and challenge someone who isn’t the best duelist

in the companion manga (not released in english) its revealed the device severs his conciousness. Sera stops him mid-way because without a conduit, he could die. Which is why she entrusts him with the Quantum Cube at the end of the movie. It's also why he's able to negate Aigami's attempt to erase him. Sera gave Kaiba all the info on how to protect himself.
