@hannah.theloudteacher: I think we roll our eyes a lot when kids say “blah blah is my favorite teacher”. (And sometimes it’s worth the eye roll, especially when the classroom is a free for all). BUT I think there’s an important space and place to be a “favorite” because your expectations are high and consistent. I had a coworker tell me to “change my personality” before my second year teaching and that’s always hit home for me. Because why? When we pretend to be someone we aren’t, burnout sets in quicker. #teachertok #teachertips #middleschoolteacher #teacheradvice #favoriteteacher
100%. I’ve started saying, I’m not the fun teacher but I’m the safe teacher. I love when they feel safe, once they feel safe they are all yours 🥰

The way I speak to the kids is the same way I speak to adults! Obviously, there are slight differences, but the respect is the same!

I’m the favorite teacher; we’re talking like celebrity status. I am who I am. My students feel safe and loved. My colleagues hate on me, talk behind my back (sometimes I hear them) but I’m not there for them. I couldn’t care less what they think. I’ve earned my title; they should take notes 😏

You won’t ever be all of your students favorite teacher, but if they found at least one teacher who they connect with, then the school community worked!

Kind of. You forgot about them. It’s about the connection you have with them. Getting to know them. Being with them. Helping them.

Yessssss. I’d much rather be genuine than try to make myself into the teacher admin wants me to be. If it doesn’t feel right or natural to me, I think the kids pick up on it right away. I talk to them like they’re actual people. I don’t use cutesy language or PBIS speak. I let them call me bro. I let them joke around with me. Then they’re happy to follow my expectations because they know I genuinely want what’s best for them and I’m asking for a good reason. It builds trust.

This is a fact!! I am a more *strict* teacher but I have found that kids love the consistency and the transparency I offer. 🥰

It is destructive and depressing for humanity to come to a point where you have to explain this as if it weren't obvious ☠️

100%. Told my kids ALL about how I fell down the iced over stairs while taking out my puppy last night. We all laughed together, shared stories about falling on ice, then moved on to class. We are a family.

I just did a values assessment and got authenticity and compassion as my top 2, and that explains my entire 26 year teaching career. 🥰

I think it’s important to never assume a kids favorite teacher is just because they let them get away with things, you never truly know what’s going on in another teachers classroom

You are spot on. My classroom can be like whack-a-mole with students asking questions. Can it be overstimulating sometimes? Yes. But if nothing is being asked, nothing is being learned. Im not giving my students the answers. I’m holding them accountable, and that’s what makes them trust in me and my feedback, especially when they make mistakes.
