You wanted commitment. Excitement. Bliss. A love that felt safe, passionate, and intentional. You wanted a future with them, and you were willing to give your all to make it happen. But no matter how much you did for them, how much you loved them, how much you sacrificed, you couldn’t make them want something they weren’t willing to choose for themselves. And that’s what hurts the most. They gave you pieces and glimpses of the love you had always dreamed of. Just enough to keep you hoping. Just enough to make you believe in their potential. You saw the good in them. You saw who they could be. And you held onto that version of them, even when their actions kept showing you something different. Unfaithfulness. Selfishness. Pride. Ego. And somehow, you kept finding reasons to forgive, to understand, to stay. You kept thinking that maybe if you loved them a little harder, gave them a little more, or were just a little more patient, things would finally change. But at some point, you have to stop falling in love with someone’s potential and start accepting who they are showing you they are. Because you can love someone with your entire heart and still have to choose yourself. And sometimes, the longer you stay, the more of yourself you lose. You start sacrificing your peace for the possibility of a future. You keep investing in a life with someone that you don’t realize may never have been yours to begin with. You spend years hoping for change, believing in promises, and waiting for the love you’ve been giving to finally be returned in the ways you’ve always needed. And then one day, you look back and realize that years have passed, and the same patterns are still there. That was one of the hardest lessons I’ve ever had to learn. Because in the end, I had to be honest with myself. It wasn’t just the other person who kept me there. It was me who kept forgiving. Me who kept giving chances. Me who kept holding onto potential. Me who kept ignoring the intuition God had given me when, deep down, I knew something wasn’t right. And that realization hurt in a way I can’t fully explain. I had to accept that I was so focused on not losing them that I didn’t realize how much of myself I was losing in the process. Choosing yourself is hard when your heart still wants the life you imagined with someone. But you cannot keep abandoning yourself to hold onto someone who repeatedly shows you they aren’t willing to build that life with you. At some point, you have to stop asking how much more you can give to make them change and start asking how much longer you’re willing to keep losing yourself. Listen to your intuition. Pay attention to the patterns. Stop letting the beautiful moments convince you to overlook the painful ones. You don’t have to hate them. You don’t have to pretend the love wasn’t real. You don’t even have to stop seeing the good in them. You just have to accept that love alone isn’t enough when commitment, honesty, and effort aren’t there. And if I could go back and tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: Don’t spend years trying to convince someone to choose you when God has been giving you signs that it’s time to choose yourself. 🤍
