Inheritance tax is one of the most controversial taxes in Ireland, but does the current system actually work for everyone? Back in 2009, a child could inherit over half a million euros from their parents tax-free. Today, even with recent budget adjustments bringing the threshold to €420,000, we have to ask: should we be increasing allowances for a tax that statistics show only a tiny percentage of the population ever actually pays? Especially when official bodies like the Commission on Taxation and Welfare have advised substantially reducing these thresholds instead. Wealth transfer should be part of a fair tax system, but the current rules are full of blind spots. Here are 3 major fixes needed right now: 1️⃣ Increase the Small Gift Exemption: The maximum tax-free gift you can receive from any single person sits at €3,000 a year - a limit that hasn't budged in over two decades. To account for inflation, this needs to be raised to €5,000. 2️⃣ Fix Dwelling House Relief: The current relief mainly benefits children who never left the family home, creating massive unfairness for renters and first-time buyers saddled with heavy mortgages. We need a system loosened for family homes but capped to prevent abuse. 3️⃣ Establish a Common Allowance: Strict relationship-based groups mean property inherited from an uncle can be heavily taxed, even if you receive zero support from your parents. Moving to a universal allowance where everyone can pass on the same amount tax-free, regardless of who they leave it to, could create genuinely fairer outcomes. Where do you stand on inheritance tax? Let’s talk about it in the comments. 👇
