I’ve only ever heard bad things about people who get solar panels. It seems like a pyramid scheme to me tbh.

From a roofer standpoint, no. No roofer will touch your roof until you have them come out and remove them, which can get expensive.

My house was a new build and came with solar panels. My power bill is $17.60 (base amount they make you pay 🙄). I’ve lived here 4 years and haven’t had a single problem or issue with my panels. Sometimes new homeowners can get grants or credits for adding solar.

From a solar user. When the sun goes down you are back on the grid. Without batteries you still will have an electric bill. Summers are higher

As a realtor, solar panels always are a pain when selling a house. They are usually leases and the new buyer has to apply to take over the account. If they don’t want solar panels, it’s a big pain.

I worked for a builders association, and got to know a solar guy really well. He said there are very few places where solar actually makes sense financially for anyone. He said once most have recouped their investment, it’s time to replace panels. That being said, my father built our home using geothermal (back in the 80s). I think it definitely helps, but it’s hard to say how much without a true comparison.

I just wish Houston’s buy back program was better. Ours house in college station has them, had the buy back program when we got them and now it’s not as much as it used to be to be. So a $300 payment on the panels and still having the tenants have $250 bills at some points

We are in AZ and have solar panels. Our air runs 24/7 in the summer and we have $20 electric bills. They will get higher after you use the stored energy, blah, blah something. We save, overall, and it’s better for the environment

Solar leases are such a hassle when you resell. Something to think about!

ok I think I have a different opinion that the other comments, disclaimer I live in WA. just bought a house that has new solar panels and a new roof in the past 1.5 years. we thought we'd have to take over payments by there are laws which prevent sale of a home if panels aren't paid off, so our sellers had to pay the remaining balance (25k!!) for our 6 panels. summer our energy bill was great, like less than 50 per month and we have everything electric. in the winter (we also installed minisplits) so far my bills have been around $100 but last winter at our old house of similar size and age they were $300. I feel we came into a great situation but if you can get a good deal and plan to keep ownership until they're paid off I do think it's worth it. energy prices are only increasing. plus you could get a battery to save solar energy

If a fire is in your house fire fighters won’t put out fire if you have solar panels

The plug in ones are the only ones that would be worth it. The issue is you have to let the energy company know you have them and they’re not allowed in most states. It’s really effed up. Search it on here.

current solar panel owner. unless you pay outright your payment is equal to a large electric bill. So it's kind of dawned if yiu do, dawned if yiu don't.

If you are even possibly going to sell prior to paying off the panels, I would suggest not getting them. They are a pain to sell with the house. You have to coordinate with both your mortgage company, the solar panel company, the sellers AND the sellers have to qualify to take over your loans AND most often there’s a lien on the property that makes it hard to sell without paying off the lien.

I think all new builds should be required to include enough renewable energy to power 25% of the structure’s electricity. But, I’m not in charge of the world, sooo…

Make sure you have enough panels to cover all of your energy. That way you won’t have a power bill on top of your solar and you can even get credits if your panels produce more than you use

In theory it makes sense but …. The cost to mine the material needed for solar panels does not cut down on the carbon footprint. Neither does the transportation and storage or materials. Plus, maintenance of the solar panels can be costly. If your roof is damaged. Forget getting a roofer out to fix it. Overall, not worth it at all. (And we have them) don’t be duped.
