We genuinely do need more ASL interpreters in the work force, but it’s also a bit back-handed when people assume a hearing person who knows ASL is an interpreter.

they do the same to wheelchair users and it's so annoying. or when people tell my husband he's a hero for being around me. it's one of my biggest pet peeves too

Thats a weird reaction from the server, my first reaction is more of us need to learn other languages including sign language. Or more interpreters i guess, but odd to assume your friend is an interpreter

My dad is slowly becoming deaf but he’s kinda insecure about it, how should I bring up that we should start learning sign language with him without seeming rude about it :)

no it's definitely weird. iwork retail and i would never say something like this to a customer. it's none of my business what people's relationship is. interpretor, friend, gf... why would i even ask it's your privacy

Had some lady come up to me while I was mid seizure once and randomly held my forehead and prayed for me. It was weird and awkward especially because I barely could register what was going on

Also a pet peeve when they completely ignore you and focus on the speaker. I went to the store once and the cashier handed MY CHANGE to my brother I was like ???? That’s my money bruh

Say a restaurant has a server that knows ASL, but they aren’t your server, would you prefer that they interpret your order to your server or simply take over as your server? (Or neither?) :)

I’m HOH and sign. I talk. When I’m out in public with other deaf friends I don’t talk. It’s so much easier on everyone.

I feel like they assume a deaf person either wouldn’t have hearing friends or they wouldn’t have friends at all? Either way it’s crazy how people just delete someone from existence the moment there’s a challenge to communicate.

🙄 im kind of glad I didnt have to go through that with my family member. but I honestly dont remember how we ordered for them at restaurants. we just did cause we all decide together before ordering
