It became popular in Nigeria through Alajo Shomolu, known as “the father of Ajo.” He learnt the contribution system in Cameroon while staying with his uncle before bringing it back home. Ajo is a Yoruba word, but it is known by different names across regions: • Danshi – in Hausa • Osusu – in Igbo • Tontine – in Cameroon Types of Ajo There are two major types: 1. Rotational Ajo – members contribute and take turns collecting the lump sum. 2. Fixed Savings Ajo – members save a fixed amount for a specific duration and cash out at the end.
